Social loneliness is isolation marked by a lack of social contact, which can lead to loneliness. This can be caused by moving home or job, retiring or perhaps starting university or a new job in a new city. All of these require one to leave known and established networks of friends and communities to build anew. The lack of these social connections can lead to profound loneliness, anxiety and stress, especially for individuals who are vulnerable and belong to a minority in the dominant society, due to ethnicity, gender, disability, poverty etc.
